How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

Rotating tires

How often should you rotate your tires? In general, it’s a good idea to do a tire rotation every 5,000 to 8,000 miles, or around each time you get your oil changed. When to rotate your tires changes depending on the kind of vehicle you drive, or more specifically, on its drivetrain. Your driving habits can also have an outsized effect on your tires, and how many miles will pass before you should rotate your tires. As always, your owner’s manual is the best source of information for your specific vehicle. To learn more, keep reading, and if you have any questions, contact us!

Rotating Tires on FWD and RWD Vehicles

How many miles pass before rotating tires, and when to rotate tires, often comes down to the drivetrain layout of your vehicle. Vehicles with two wheel drive, specifically front wheel drive and rear wheel drive vehicles, are generally easier on tires. Here are some tire rotation tips for these vehicles:

  • How many miles to rotate tires on a FWD or RWD car? Tire rotation should be performed every 5,000 to 7,500 miles, but your owner’s manual will have the exact figure.
  • If you’re doing a FWD tire rotation yourself, keep in mind to flip sides when moving the rear tires. For example, the rear right tire will go on the front left. However, when moving the front tires to the back, keep them on the same side.
  • When rotating tires on an RWD car, invert the process above. Flip sides when moving the front tires to the back, but keep the rear tires on the same side when moving them forward.
  • Keep in mind how you drive, like off-roading, will affect how often you need to rotate your tires. Talk with the service experts at Post Oak Toyota to get a better idea of a maintenance schedule that fits your driving habits.

AWD Tire Rotation Tips

Because all wheel drive, or AWD, vehicles are generally somewhat harder on tires, they should be rotated every 3,000 – 5,000 miles. If doing a rotation yourself in Oklahoma City, mark down this process with a color-coded diagram:

  1. The left rear goes to the right front spot.
  2. The right rear goes to the left front spot.
  3. The right front goes to the left rear spot.
  4. The left front goes to the right rear spot.
