Buying a Car in Another State: Registration
After purchasing your vehicle, the first thing you need to do is register it in your home state. A trip to the DMV with the appropriate documents is necessary for this. Here are the required items:
- A Bill of Sale that has the purchase price you paid listed clearly on it
- Completed application for vehicle transaction form
- Title of the vehicle signed by the previous owner
- Lienholders’ names and address
- Filled out odometer disclosure state for title transfer
- Tax Form RUT-50 Private Party Vehicle Tax Transaction
- Registration Fees
- Proof of insurance
- Proof of residency
Tell the DMV clerk that you purchased the car out of state, with the intent of titling and registering it at your address.
- The clerk will Probably return your bill of sale, but they will keep your %%di_state%% title, and ask that you pay the appropriate difference in sales tax between the two states.
- Keep your eye on your mailbox for a new title.
Buying a Car Out-of-State: Taxes and Fees
Beyond the price of the vehicle, the taxes and fees you will need to pay for buying a car out of state are only these:
- Your local sales tax
- The difference between %%di_state%% and the other states’ sales tax
- Applicable processing fees at your DMV
The process is almost certainly the same as if you were registering a new car from Edmond or Shawnee.
